( 1) What is fountain pen?

Fountain pen is the most traditional of writing instruments. Fountain pen uses a wet ink system and normally has a choice of pen nibs and nib grades to suit individual tastes and writing techniques.

(2) What is the difference between a roller ball and a ballpoint pen?

A roller ball pen uses liquid ink and has a fluid, wet and smooth feel. The standard roller ball refill uses a wet ink system, which is similar to that of the fountain pen. Most roller ball pens must have caps to prevent the ink from drying out.

A ballpoint pen uses thick paste ink and has a more controlled feel. Ballpoint ink has greater densities than that of water based ink, giving it a longer writing life. Most ballpoint pens do not have caps, but use twist or push mechanisms.

(3) What are standard, oblique and italic nibs?

Standard nibs have a rounded shape at the tip of the writing point, which gives smooth, free flowing writing as well as a uniform writing line. They are suited to any style of writing, both left-handed and right-handed.

An oblique nib is precision cut obliquely to compensate for extreme writing angles. The nib is fitted with a rounded pellet, which allows the pen to write smoothly in all direction.

Italic nibs are manufactured with a sharp, straight cut tip and finished with a flat pellet. This gives a thick line in one direction and a thin line at right angles to that direction as necessary for the italic style of writing.

(4) How do I select the proper nib width for my fountain pen?

There are different nib sizes for various fountain pens, generally there are available in extra fine, fine, medium and broad. The most important factor in determining nib size is the style of your handwriting. A fine or extra fine nib is always recommended if your handwriting is small and tight. If your handwriting is large and fast, a medium nib is recommended. Broad nibs are generally made for signatures and bold writing. For gift giving purposes, a fine nib is generally recommend for ladies and a medium nib is for men.
